Why we’re done with Big Tech

How we keep you protected

You asked a fair question: who’s profiting off your data? Here’s the honest answer, and exactly what we do about it.

Most technology is sold to you on convenience. Sign up free, click through the setup, and you’re running in an afternoon. What no one mentions is the trade. Your files, your contacts, your customers, and your day-to-day activity become the product. The fees climb later, and by then your data is hard to move and harder to get back.

We work the other way. Protection is not a feature we add at the end. It is how we choose every tool and design every system from the start.

We research the ethics behind every tool, not just the features

Anyone can compare feature lists. We look at who owns the company, how they make money, where your data physically lives, and what happens to it if you leave. If a vendor’s business model depends on collecting and selling what you put into it, that is a strike against it no matter how polished the interface.

Your data stays yours, and portable

We favor systems you can host yourself or move without a fight: open formats, standard exports, no hostage-taking. The test we apply to anything we recommend is simple. If you fired us tomorrow, could you walk away with everything intact? If the answer is no, we don’t build you into it.

We watch the bad actors so you don’t have to

Some of the biggest names in tech once promised not to be evil, then quietly dropped the promise. They collect your data, sell it, and treat privacy fines as the cost of doing business. Keeping track of which companies do this, and when they change the rules, is part of our job. You shouldn’t have to read every terms-of-service update to stay safe. That’s what we’re for.

We recommend what protects you, not what pays us

We bill flat-fee or hourly, so our advice never depends on signing you up for a subscription. What we recommend is driven by what keeps your data safe, not by who pays us. If a tool we already trust happens to run an affiliate program, we may use it, but we will never point you toward something that violates your privacy or security, no matter what it pays. We’ve been independent since 2008, and that’s how we stay independent.

We’ll tell you what to skip

Even when it’s something we could sell you. The honest answer is sometimes “you don’t need this,” or “the free option is fine,” or “keep what you have.” A guide who only ever says yes isn’t protecting you. They’re selling.
