WHO WE HELP

You don’t have to be technical to be responsible for your technology.

Nonprofits and organizers

You hold people’s trust along with their data. We help you protect your donors, the people you serve, and your mission from tools that quietly put them at risk.

How we help nonprofits

Business owners

Maybe you are renting your tools from companies whose interests are not aligned with yours. Maybe your systems were pieced together over the years and the person who set them up is gone. We help you own what runs your business, untangle the mess, and answer the phone when you need us.

Developers and the tech-curious

The software you write or use is meant to help. We help beginning and experienced developers understand the fundamentals and build on ethical foundations, so the systems you build or hand off protect the people who use them.

Here is what most tech help never tells you.

WHAT YOU CAN’T SEE

The worst tech problems don’t show up as errors.

They show up quietly, in places you were never shown how to look.

Most of the tech you rely on was built to lock you in and sell your data. Here is where it hides.

  • Your data gets sold, and you are not the only one watching. “Free” tools and “first 10 licenses free” offers rarely are (the free version of that booking tool you rely on is tracking every customer who visits your site). You, your customers, and your donors become the product, traded behind the screen, while trackers and third-party scripts you never approved follow every visitor who lands on your site.
  • You get locked in. When your website, email, and records live inside one company’s walls, leaving means losing everything. That is not an accident. It is the business model.
  • Your subscriptions may fund politics and business practices that work against the very people you serve. The defaults were set before you understood the harm.

And we practice what we preach. This site sets no third-party cookies, loads no Big Tech trackers or fonts, and any analytics we use are privacy-first and self-hosted.

You may never have willingly chosen any of this. The good news: ethical alternatives already exist for every one of these. We help you find them.

HOW WE HELP

A clear path off the tools that work against you.

We help with the everyday tools that run your work: websites, email, newsletters, scheduling and booking, and inventory, so each one protects the people you serve instead of exposing them.

Tech Assessment

A plain-language written look at what you are running today and where it is putting you at risk, with honest priorities on what to change first.

WHY DESK READY

We did not expect to be doing this work.

We have spent years helping people and organizations learn technology and run their websites, email, and business tools. We did not think we would see a day when we would also need to help them get away from Big Tech and software that had turned manipulative and extractive, built on selling data and putting people in harm’s way. Yet here we are. Change has always caused hesitation. We are here to help your technology align with your values.

For years we have helped clients move off Big Tech and onto systems they own, systems that protect the people they serve. We have done the hard work of finding what actually works, so you do not have to. We share what we have learned through free resources, and we consult directly when you want a hand.

We spent years inside Big Tech and healthcare, in the rooms where the trade-offs between the bottom line and the people being served were decided. We know where the harm hides, because we watched it get built. We started Desk Ready to put that knowledge on your side of the table. Not to scare you, but to give you the same clear-eyed view the big companies have always had, and the practical help to act on it.

IN THEIR WORDS

Teams who took back control.

Judy designed and built our chamber’s member website so member profiles could be easily updated and classified into the right categories. She trained our staff and ran classes so members could actually get the most out of tools like presentations, spreadsheets, and word processing software. She had a way of making tech newbies feel comfortable with technology.

As a relatively new nonprofit, we were so fortunate to find Judy Lipinski. After three years of operating, we needed to know where to take our technical capacity next, and she gave us a quick but deep assessment of our risk and strength areas, with concrete, well-organized recommendations. I would highly recommend Judy to any nonprofit looking to develop its privacy, security, and technical capacity.

Lisa Storment
President, Wake UP Sonoma

Judy has given me the keys to the kingdom. I have always approached technology with trepidation, but recently my concerns about data security had grown exponentially. Judy listened deeply, evaluated what I already had in place, and with extraordinary speed delivered an honest overview of where I stood along with step-by-step instructions on what to change. For the first time, I feel empowered to expand my public presence.

At The Hope Center, Judy designed a website that made it easy for staff to post fundraising events directly to our calendar, and that gave people a simple way to volunteer or to seek help from the shelter. She has a way of building technology that fits how real people, and real volunteers, actually work.
